Funke came into the Nollywood lime light in 1998 when she starred in a sitcom titled ‘I Need to Know’ which was aired between 1998 to 2002. This marked the beginning of her flourishing career in Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry.

In 2009, Funke Akindele’s exceptional talent was recognized as she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. However, it was her role in the movie “Jenifa” that truly propelled her to stardom and earned her the nickname – Jenifa, which has since become synonymous with her name. This film not only brought her immense fame but also paved the way for numerous accolades, including the Best Actress in a Comedy awards at the 2016 and 2017 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.
