Nigerian Copyright Commission Meets with Stakeholders in Makurdi

IN preparation for the upcoming 2024 book season, the Makurdi Office of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), held an interactive session with representatives of publishers, freelancers, and executive members of the National Association of Private Proprietors of Schools (NAPPS), on August 21, 2024.
The meeting underscored the need for strict compliance with the Copyright Act to protect Intellectual Property and curb copyright piracy during and after the book season.

In his remarks, the State Coordinator, Mr. Thomas Mgbanngun, stressed the need for stakeholders to adhere to publishing and distribution rules, particularly as it regards to the provisions of the Copyright laws. He warned against all forms of Copyright violations, stating that any individual or organisation found contravening the law would face severe penalties as outlined in the Copyright Act.

He stated that while the Commission is not out to harm businesses, it would not hesitate to take decisive action against anyone involved in piracy or related criminal activities.

He further advised schools to exercise caution when purchasing books, urging them to ensure that sellers have verifiable fixed addresses and identities. This precaution, he explained, is necessary to ensure that those selling books can be easily traced if any issues arise, referencing past incidents where individuals arrested for piracy were unable to identify or trace the suppliers of pirated books.

Speaking at the event, Manager, University Press, Mr. Adesiya Adesola, expressed gratitude to the Commission for organising the event, noting its importance to the industry.
He assured of the Commission’s willingness to strengthen relations with Publishers and other stakeholders in the book production and distribution chain.
