NCC Trains Customs Officers on Identification of Pirated Works

AS part of its drive to strengthen interagency collaboration and ensure easy identification of copyright protected works at the nation’s borders, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) Lagos Office recently embarked on the training of senior officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Tin Can Area Command, Lagos on 2nd November 2023.

According to the Director, Lagos Office (DLO), Mrs. Lynda Alphaeus, who disclosed this in a report, the training focused on the general nature of copyright and what to look out for when dealing with imported copyright materials in order to check piracy at the port of entry.

Highlights of the training includes: identifying the copyright owner or publisher especially in the case of imported copyright books and what to look out for where the importation is by a person who is not the publisher or copyright owner; the requirement of authorisation to import; and the need for thorough investigation where books are being imported from countries that are notorious for piracy.

The training was rounded off with the DLO encouraging and charging the officers as part of Nigeria’s international obligation on border measures to be more vigilant and proactive.
