FOLLOWING the amendment of the Copyright Act 2022 and subsequent signing into law to strengthen the operations of the Commission, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has transformed into a revenue generating agency within one year of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
This was disclosed by the Hon. Attorney-General of the Federation (HAGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, in the scorecard of the Federal Ministry of Justice and its Parastatals from 29th May 2023 to date.
The disclosure was made during the Ministerial Sectorial Update for the present administration under the leadership of President Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR at the National Press Centre, Abuja from the 23rd to 24th May 2024.
The HAGF in his presentation also stated that in furtherance of the President’s priority role assigned to the Justice ministry to improve governance for effective service delivery, the ministry made concerted and collaborative effort with relevant stakeholders in the Justice sector which culminated in significant achievements.
He clarified that the Justice sector transcends the Ministry of Justice and that policies and activities in the sector are driven by different stakeholders who play assigned roles ranging from enactment of laws, rules and regulations, interpretation of laws; adjudication, implementation and enforcement of laws with the ultimate aim of ensuring access to justice.
Prince Fagbemi, informed that in line with the Ministry’s mandate of ensuring national security and safety through prosecution, the ministry has secured 160 convictions of criminal offences, 87 convictions for terrorism cases and 3 fresh convictions for terrorism offences involving radicalisation of children and violence against women.
It will be recalled that the Director-General, NCC, Dr. John O. Asein, on assumption of the leadership of the Commission five years ago focused on the policy thrust of ‘Changing the Copyright Narrative for Wealth Creation’. This mantra was followed through with the passage and signing of the Copyright Act 2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. The commitment, resilience and diligence of the Director-General, staff members coupled with the collaborative effort of stakeholders in activating some of the revenue generating clause in the course of the implementation the new Copyright Act complemented the strides made by the Commission in the last one year.
The Ministerial Sectoral Update for the present administration at the National Press Centre, Abuja was quite enlightening with each serving Minister in the Federal Executive Council rolling out their scorecards in the last one year and outlining their road maps for the subsequent years.
The DG-NCC, Dr. John O.Asein and other Heads of Agencies under the Federal Ministry of Justice were in attendance.
