Joke Silva Jacobs

The movie legend Joke Silva Jacobs who is a movie actor, producer and director was born in Lagos on the 29th September, 1961.

She first cut her teeth in acting during her University days when she joined a theatre group which comprised of the likes of the playwright Bode Osanyin and the singer Stella Monye. She later proceeded to the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts London, United Kingdom to further horne her craft.

Joke Silva fully began her acting career in Nigeria in the 90’s when she starred in an English Language Television Series “Mind Bending”. As a crossover actor, she has acted in many movies in English and Yoruba. Some of these include:
“Owurolojo” a Yoruba movie (1993),”Violated”(1996); “Laughter of Women” (1999) “Last Wedding”(2004), “Women’s Cot”(2005), “30 Days” (2006) “Eewo Orisa”(2007) “The Royal Hibiscus Hotel”(2017), “Chief Daddy” (2018), “Two Weeks in Lagos”(2019),”Namatse Wahala” (2021)and “Eleshin Oba”, “The King Horsemen” (2022).

The year 1998 was a remarkable year in Joke’s acting career when she acted alongside Colin Firth and Nia Long two prominent international actors in a British-Canadian movie “The Secret Laughter of Women” where she played the role of ‘Nene’.

She has won several awards among them are: Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 2nd African Movie Awards in the movie ‘Women’s Cot’ and Best Actress at the 4th Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2008 for a role as a grandmother in a movie ‘White Waters’.

Joke Silva has also been honoured for her great contribution to the development of the movie industry with the award of Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Campaigns.

She is married to the legendary actor Olu Jacobs and together they founded the Lufodo Group, a media corporation involved in film production. Joke is also the Director of Studies at the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, a subsidiary of the Lufodo Group.

She is also the pioneering Managing Director of Malete Film Village in association with Kwara State University.

Joke Silva Jacobs has indeed made a mark in the movie industry both locally and internationally and is a great cultural and copyright icon.
