OPERATIVES of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) have been trained on modalities to lawfully utilise dedicated Google portals for the removal of harmful or illicit contents from web pages.
Director Operations, Mr. Obi Ezeilo who disclosed this in a report stated that the training was part of a Google Workshop for Legal Removal and Information Requests organised for Government Agencies responsible for managing Intellectual Property (IP) contents in the Nigerian data space by Google Nigeria on Thursday, 7th July 2022 in Abuja.
The training was aimed at sensitising users and participants with deeper understanding of Google’s takedown policies and processes; equip policy makers with first hand insight to better discharge their mandates and to create an avenue for Google and Youtube to get feedback through users’ perspectives.
The training had several sessions, including: Introduction to Content Removal; Copyright Requests; and Youtube Content Removal. The sessions presented participants with insights on the lifecycle of a copyright infringement report, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notification as well as counter notices; and enlightened participants on how a copyright holder, upon identifying a content that infringes his copyright, can submit request through Google webform for legal action.
According to him, five officers of the Commission benefited from the training aimed at also providing IP relevant Law Enforcement Agencies with practical knowledge on how to effectively use Google portals to request for removal of harmful or illegal contents in synergy.
The Director, gave the names of officers at the training as: Chief Copyright Officer, PRS, Mrs. Ijeoma Ogbogu; Assistant Chief Copyright Officer, Operations, Mr. Sylvester Emeana; Principal Officer, Operations, Mr. Mike Ekunke, Principal Copyright Officer, IT Unit, Yinka Lawal and Admin Officer I, DG’s Office, Oluwaseun Aluko.
Officials of Nigerian Communication Commission, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); Federal Ministry of Information and Culture; National Information Technology Development Agency and other agencies also attended the training.
