THE Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has organised a specialised training programme on news reporting and photo journalism for staff of its Public Affairs Department and others across all its State Offices. The training, which focused on Basic Techniques of News Writing and Photography was held in hybrid format on 12th November 2024.
Speaking at the opening of the programme, the Director-General of the Commission Dr. John O. Asein, stressed the importance of staff retraining to upscale their skills and expose them to modern practices and trends in their areas of engagement. He noted that the training on news reporting and photo journalism was another in a series of knowledge upgrade programmes to sharpen the skills of staff in various Departments and enhance their capacity. He called on the staff to reciprocate Management’s gesture by deploying the knowledge gained for better customer satisfaction.
Stressing the importance of the Public Affairs Department as the Commission’s image maker, he stressed the need for the staff to constantly improve on their knowledge and how to effectively disseminate information about the Commission to their primary audience. He charged them to put the training to good use to advance the Commission’s effort to enrich the quality of its public engagement for better service delivery.
In her welcome remarks, the Director, Public Affairs Department, Mrs. Ijeoma Egbunike, thanked the Director-General for the training, which she hailed as an opportunity for staff to be better enlightened, improve on their competences as image makers and facilitate effective coverage and reporting of the Commission’s activities. She expressed optimism that the training would expose staff to modern techniques of news coverage, writing styles, the imperatives of photo journalism and public relations duties.
The training session covered presentations on Basic Knowledge and Principles of News Writing by Mr. Joshua Olomu of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN); Understanding Basic Photojournalism by Mr. Isa Nuhu of Aso Radio/TV, Abuja and Mastering Event Photography and Captioning by Mr. Abdullateef Salau of Daily Trust Newspaper, Abuja.
