AS part of its proactive efforts to check piracy in the country, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), in collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), on the 21st February 2025 uncovered and intercepted a container of suspected pirated books belonging to Macmillan Nigeria Publishers at a terminal of Tin Can Island in Lagos.
According to the Director, Lagos Office (DLO), Mrs. Lynda Alpheus, the container had earlier been identified as containing suspected pirated materials by operatives of the Commission. Mrs. Alphaeus revealed that following the sale of the container during a Port’s decongestion process, the NCC was alerted by the buyer of a restriction notice placed on the container leading to confiscation of items found inside it.
Items found in the container are as follows: Macmillan Brilliant Primary English Book 3, Macmillan Brilliant Primary English Book 4, and Macmillan Brilliant Primary English Book 5.
The DLO informed that further investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the pirated books and to identify those responsible for the illegal importation. She maintained that the NCC will continue to work in close partnership with other law enforcement agencies, stakeholders in the publishing industry, and relevant authorities to curb the menace of book piracy in Nigeria.
