Copyright Commission Commits to Empower Universities Protect Creative Works

THE Nigerian Copyright Commission has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Universities in developing and implementing comprehensive Intellectual Property (IP) policies.
Director-General, NCC Dr. John O. Asein, reiterated this at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi’s (NSUK) 8th Annual Research Fair/ Exhibition, on 20th November 2024. He further gave assurances of the Commission’s commitment to promote a culture of innovation and creativity in Nigerian universities, while protecting the rights of creators.
The event, themed Disruptive Transformational Innovation…Shaping the Future, provided a platform for researchers, scientists, creators, students, and other talented individuals to showcase their innovative works. Speaking at the event, the Director-General represented by Director of the Nigerian Copyright Academy, Mrs. Funmi Adewale, commended NSUK for the initiative and urged other institutions to follow suit.
While emphasising the Commission’s efforts to protect creativity, check piracy, and promote a vibrant copyright ecosystem, she encouraged institutions to reach out to the NCC for guidance on copyright matters and assured them of the Commission’s commitment to collaborating on the development of comprehensive IP policies.
She noted that it is important for schools to work with the Commission, adopt and leverage on the recently published Model IP Policy, as it will help strengthen financial sustainability of Institutions and provide the needed funds for research, creativity and innovations.
The Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, Prof. Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, acknowledged the NCC’s support and expressed the institution’s willingness to work with the Commission to strengthen its creative and innovative output.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, represented by the State Commissioner of Education, Mr. John Mamman, and the HRH. Emir of Keffi and Chancellor of NSUK, Dr. Shehu Chindo Yamusa.
