THE Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) through its training arm, the Nigerian Copyright Academy (NCA) has conducted sensitization programmes to promote copyright awareness and nurture creative talents in among Secondary School students.
The sensitization was carried out at Regina Pacis College and Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Academy, both in Garki, Abuja on the 4th and 11th October 2024 respectively.
Speaking at the events, the Director-General NCC, Dr. John O. Asein, emphasised the socioeconomic benefits of creativity, calling it Nigeria’s “latest oil well.”
The DG-NCC who was represented by the Director NCA, Mrs. Funmi Adewale, encouraged students to harness their creative potentials, respect the rights of creators and join the campaign against piracy and other forms of copyright infringements. She reassured stakeholders of the Commission’s commitment to strengthen policies that will safeguard the creative industry.
Regina Pacis College’s Vice-Principal Academics, Mr. Laji Timothy, delivering the welcome address, expressed gratitude to the Commission and urged students to take note of the valuable information shared. Comedian and movie producer, Mr. Bright Fred and musician Mr. Romeo 14 also encouraged students to harness their creative potentials.
Vice Principal Academics, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Academy, Mrs. Zaynab Abbas, welcoming participants to the event, noted that copyright knowledge is of great importance. She appreciated the efforts of the Commission at enlightening the public on the subject and expressed optimism that the knowledge gained will be of great benefit.
The sensitization featured presentations on the Basics of Copyright and the Commission’s mandates by the DNCA, question and answer sessions, performances and insights by invited creatives, presentation of copies of the Commission’s publication WHAT IS COPYRIGHT to the school libraries and picture sessions.
