A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE AMAKA IGWE (Nigerian Film Producer and Director)

Uzoamaka Audrey Igwe was a Nigerian film producer and director, born in 1963. She was a second-generation filmmaker who made her mark during the video film era in Nigeria.

Amaka Igwe was renowned for her unique and exceptional productions that always stood out for their quality. She was a gifted storyteller, producer, director, and teacher, whose impact on the Nigerian film industry was unparalleled.

Amaka Igwe became a household name with the production of the award-winning TV soap, “Checkmate,” and its offshoot, “Fuji House of Commotion.” Her major home video productions in the ’90s and early 2000s, such as “Rattle Snake” and “Violated,” remain timeless classics.

Amaka Igwe established Amaka Igwe Studios and founded BOBTV and Top Radio 90.9FM. Her contributions to the Nigerian film industry are immeasurable, and her legacy will continue to live on.

In 2011, Amaka Igwe was honored with the Nigerian National Order of Member of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (MFR) for her outstanding contributions to the industry.

Today, we fondly remember the late Amaka Igwe, whose works continue to speak, 9 years after her passage in 2014; the Nigerian Copyright Commission celebrates a creative icon who revolutionized the Nigerian film industry through her exceptional production and directorial skills. She raised the bar for quality and inspired a new generation of filmmakers to continue her legacy.
