Officers of the Commission backed up by a contingent of armed Policemen arrested a suspected pirate Mr. Zion Ndarake Akpan during the operation carried out on May 7, 2014.
The Commission's Liaison Officer in Uyo Mr. Amudipe Charles who disclosed this in a report explained that the raid was a fall-out of a petition received where the Publisher complained that some bookshops in Akwa Ibom are engaged in sales of pirated copies of their works.
He said Enforcement Officers of the Commission immediately sprang to action to investigate the Publishers claims, conducting surveillance and unscheduled inspections of all bookshops in Uyo and Ikot Ekpene Main Market areas and its environs.
Mr. Charles noted that three bookshops were raided and the books suspected to be pirated impounded. He gave the names of the bookshops as Zion Bookshop, 124, Udo Umanah Street, Uyo; Akpan Andem Main Market, Uyo; Ikot Ekpene Main Market, Ikot Ekpene.
He said the Commission has since begun further investigation to ensure arrest of other culprits in the case and consequent prosecution in Court.
The Liaison Officer commended stakeholders for supporting the Commission in its fight against pirates and encouraged them and the general public to keep the Commission informed of activities and hide-outs of suspected pirates.
