Container of N40 Million Suspected Pirated Books Seized by Copyright Commission, Customs & others

A twenty feet container, loaded with copies of suspected pirated literary works estimated at forty million Naira (N40 million), has been confiscated by operatives of Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Publishers Association, Christian Booksellers Association of Nigeria and the Bible Society of Nigeria at the Apapa AP Moller Terminal, Lagos. 

A report by the Ports Monitoring Officer of NCC, Mr. Joe Ojika, which disclosed this in Lagos on August 7, 2014, stated that upon a tip-off, the container marked PCIU 2724366 was intercepted.

“A joint inspection team made up of officers of the Nigeria Customs Service drawn from its various units, the Nigerian Police and the NCC officers conducted inspection on the container on 7th August 2014,” it stated.

According to the report, the Container was stacked with suspected literary works described as follows:

  • Ekpere Na Abu ( Revised and Enlarged Edition) published by CSS Bookshops
  • Oxford French Mini Dictionary published by Oxford University Press
  • Harvest of Corruption; A play by Frank Ogodo Ogbeche, published by Almaz Books Limited, Abuja
  • The old man and the Sea (Revised edition)2012 published by Seedwise Educational Service, Ibadan
  • The New Method English Dictionary by Michael West, published by Pearson/Longman
  • She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith published by Rasmed Publications Limited
  • Cassel’s French and English Dictionary by Bounty Press Limited  and Continuum International Publishing

The report stated that investigation is ongoing to unmask the identity of the pirates.

This brings to 20 the total number of containers of suspected pirated copyright works impounded so far by the Commission.Meanwhile the Director-General, NCC, Mr. Afam Ezekude, has reassured stakeholders in the copyright industries and Nigerians of the Commission’s commitment to a proactive execution of its statutory regulatory and enforcement mandate on all copyright matters.

He sent a strong warning to pirates of all categories of copyright protected works that the Commission will stop at nothing in exposing and prosecuting them.
