Nigerian Copyright Commission Impounds Pirated Literary works worth N5m in Lagos

04 December 2014

Operatives of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, NCC, have confiscated pirated literary works belonging to Macmillan Nigeria Publishers Limited at a popular courier company, IFEX Express Limited, in Jibowu Lagos during an anti-piracy operation carried out on November, 27 2014.

A report recently released at the NCC Headquarters stated that the enforcement team led by a Senior Copyright Officer, Mr. Micheal Oloruntola with the assistance of the Nigerian Police successfully intercepted several cartons of pirated literary works belonging to the above named publishing outfit.

According to the report about five thousand copies of the pirated educational material titled “Macmillan Champion Primary Mathematics Book 3” by Samuel Ilori with a market value of about Five Million Naira (N5M) were impounded during the raid.

The Director-General, NCC, Mr. Afam Ezekude therefore hereby warns Courier Service Companies and those involved in haulage services in Nigeria to ensure they do not allow their companies to be used as distribution channels in distributing pirated materials.

He also reassured all genuine stakeholders that in line with the Piracy zero-tolerance stance of the Commission, the nefarious activities of unrepentant pirates would continue to be crippled by the Commission’s proactive enforcement interventions at the various points of production, distribution and haulage of all categories of copyright protected works nationwide.
