22 October 2015

A joint task force recently set up by the Director-General, Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) Mr. Afam Ezekude, has impounded educational books in the “not for sale category” published by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) worth Three Hundred and Forty Four Thousand Naira (N344,000) and arrested four suspected pirates.

The anti-piracy operation carried out on September 3, 2015 at a book fair held in Royal City Secondary School, Nyanya, FCT was aimed at exposing and bringing to book  those who engage in unauthorized distribution and sale of pirated and “not for sale books” produced by the NERDC.

Director, Enforcement NCC, Mr. Augustine Amodu who made this disclosure in Abuja explained that the joint team was made up of two Copyright Inspectors, three officers of NERDC and five police officers. He further revealed that the operation followed a report made to the Commission of a book fair in Nyanya where the “not for sale books” published by the Council with the support of the Millennium Development Goals Office were on display.

Mr. Amodu also said that primary and secondary school books confiscated are majorly the NERDC Curriculum for both primary and secondary schools for all classes and on various subjects as taught in schools and NERDC Teachers Guide for schools including a few other works of various publishers. According to him the arrested suspected pirates have been granted administrative bail pending the outcome of full investigations which have since commenced.
